Good Food Bus Market Leader

Background:

The Good Food Bus is a program of the St Mary's Nutrition Center. The Nutrition Center brings people together to collectively imagine and build a just food system and healthy community. We envision a just and vibrant Lewiston-Auburn where neighbors care for each other and come together across difference to ensure every person has good food, a sense of purpose and belonging, and opportunities to thrive.

 

 

About the Position:

The Good Food Bus (GFB) Market Leader functions as a critical member of the GFB team, acting as the face of the project by interacting directly with customers at our various market stops. They are responsible for daily market set-up and breakdown, performing outstanding customer service, and handling all customer sales transactions. The Market Leader will promote the GFB in the community through the lens of the St. Mary’s Nutrition Center by engaging with customers, helping promote and carryout money-saving incentive programs, and gathering critical on-the-ground feedback.

The Market Leader is a part-time seasonal position (25+ hours/week) that is eligible for benefits. The position runs from June through October. Typical hours during the day are between 12 pm - 6 pm but may vary slightly. The Market Leader is stationed in Lewiston. Hours take place entirely in Lewiston-Auburn but there may be hours outside of this area for special events. Pay rate is anticipated to be $14-$15/hour, but final pay rate is commensurate with experience.

We are closely following guidance from St Mary's Regional Medical Center and the Maine CDC regarding COVID-19 related protocols and best practices. The health and well-being of our customers and staff is our highest priority. While this position does require frequent interaction with a variety of people, we insist upon doing so while following social-distancing guidelines, properly wearing masks, and frequently sanitizing hands and touched surfaces.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Drive vehicle to and from market stops (pick-up truck with a 16 foot trailer) 

  • Set up the market and make sure the market display is organized and attractive 

    • Stock bins with produce, set up checkout table, display day-of market signs 

  • Perform great customer service, outreach, and education 

    • Show enthusiasm and be welcoming; actively engage with customers 

    • Answer questions and help customers select and purchase products 

    • Promote and encourage use of SNAP/EBT 

    • Promote and explain Maine Harvest Bucks and GFB Membership program 

  • Handle all sales transactions  

    • Use an iPad register software and credit card machine to complete transactions 

    • Administer the Maine Harvest Bucks program and Neighborhood Membership Program that helps people get more fresh food for less money 

  • Promote the Good Food Bus project  

    • Talk to people about the project, what it does, and why it’s important 

    • Be familiar with overall mission and programs of St Mary’s Nutrition Center  

    • Hand out schedules, brochures, and other outreach materials 

  • Manage product inventory 

    • Stock the trailer cooler and freezer at the start of the day 

    • Make sure there is enough product on the Bus for all stops throughout the day 

    • Help organize, label, and put away food deliveries  

  • Close up the market 

    • Close up each market after every stop  

    • Close up the Good Food Bus for the day 

    • Unload food and materials as needed and ensure all food is stored safely 

  • Maintain Clean and Organized Space 

    • Clean Bus after every market stop 

    • Leave trailer clean and organized at the end of the week

Qualifications:

  • Valid driver’s license, clean driving record and minimum of 2-3 years driving a vehicle 

  • At least 1 year doing sales in a store or similar experience 

  • Available to work a flexible schedule, including evenings 

  • Excellent people skills with an emphasis on serving the public  

  • Interest and commitment in helping people get access to healthy foods 

  • Team player and ability to foster a collaborative and supportive work environment 

  • Ability to work alongside, support, and serve people from different communities 

  • Commitment to mission and goals of the St Mary’s Nutrition Center

Encouraged but not required:

  • Ability to speak and understand language(s) beyond English; French, Somali, Portuguese, Arabic 

  • Food handling, packing, and storing experience 

  • Experience driving a truck and trailer or other large vehicle 

  • Basic knowledge of MS Office and social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram
